As the leaves turn and temperatures drop, those of us with homes begin preparing for the colder months: swapping out wardrobes, turning up the heat, and stocking up on winter essentials. But for people experiencing homelessness, the arrival of cold weather brings far more daunting challenges. In Duluth, where winters are notoriously harsh, staying safe and warm becomes a matter of survival.
A Surge at our Shelter
As the cold creeps in, the Chum Shelter becomes a refuge for many. We see a significant increase in the number of individuals and families seeking shelter. People who might have been able to get by outdoors in the warmer months now face the dangerous prospect of freezing temperatures. Every bed at Chum fills quickly, and we often have to accommodate more people than usual. The overflow puts a strain on our resources, but we’re committed to ensuring that no one is left out in the cold. In the summer months, we typically see around 70-80 guests per day. When it starts getting colder, that number shoots to 100+ guests per day.
The Lifeline of the Warming Center
For those who can't make it into, or are not able to stay at our regular shelter there is the Warming Center as a vital alternative. This space is designed specifically to prevent exposure-related injuries and deaths. It opens its doors to anyone needing a place to warm up, regardless of their situation. During Duluth’s long, frigid nights, many people rely on the Warming Center to escape the harshest weather conditions. The center is often filled to capacity, offering a temporary sanctuary where people can rest, reheat, and regain some semblance of comfort.
Preparing for Another Duluth Winter
Unfortunately, not everyone will find space in a shelter or warming center. Some individuals prepare to face the Duluth winter head-on, gathering supplies like tents, tarps, and blankets. They find makeshift ways to insulate themselves from the biting wind and cold. While organizations like Chum and generous community members try to provide as much as possible—whether through donations of winter clothing or survival gear—many will still find themselves enduring unimaginable conditions.
What You Can Do to Help
As the weather turns colder, the need for support grows. We work tirelessly to provide shelter, warmth, and resources, but we can’t do it alone. Donations of warm clothing, blankets, and winter gear are always appreciated, as are financial contributions to help us expand our services during this critical time. Volunteering at the Warming Center or helping distribute supplies can also make a huge difference in someone’s life. Every little bit helps ensure that fewer people have to face the cold alone.
Winter in Duluth is unforgiving, but with the right resources and support, we can help those experiencing homelessness make it through the season safely. At Chum, we believe everyone deserves a warm place to rest—especially when the weather turns against them. Join our team of supporters, and make Duluth a better place for everyone.
