Chum Board Member Application

Thank you for your interest in assisting Chum through board membership. Please view the expectations, and fill out the application below. Be aware that these questions are not meant to exclude people, but to identify training and orientation needs. We look forward to hearing from you! If you have any questions, please call the Chum office at 218-720-6521.

Board Member Responsibilities:

  • Fiduciary - Approve annual budget, contracts, large grants, loans, and audits. Make sure funding and programs are in alignment with the mission. Review financial statements and monitor fiscal controls. Assist with annual fundraising efforts and events

  • Strategic - Develop and monitor mission and strategic plan. Hire, support, and assess performance of the Executive Director. Establish goals to ensure accountability to the law and our values. Identify, recruit, and elect members.

  • Generative – Bring personal and professional expertise to support the mission. Engage in deeper inquiry, exploring root causes, values, options, and new ideas for the organization.

Board Member Expectations:

  • Support the Chum mission: People of Faith working together to provide basic needs, foster stable lives, and organize for a just and compassionate community.

  • Understand Chum's organization and its policies and abide by them.

  • Participate in monthly board meetings and committees in person.

  • There are several Chum events throughout the year, and while attendance is important at several, none of us could commit to attending every event.

  • Make a meaningful annual financial contribution—no established minimum.

  • Serve as an ambassador both in communicating out and gathering feedback about our work.

  • Assist with fundraising relationship building.

Board Member Time Commitment:

  • The Board of Directors meet in-person on the second Thursday of each month from 6:00-8:00 PM.

  • Members may serve up to four consecutive two-year terms.

  • Board members must serve on at least one committee.

  • Outside of committee and board meetings, board members are expected to attend Chum events. These may include site visits, fundraising events, program celebrations, or training. The approximate minimum time commitment is 4-6 hours per month.
