Volunteer

CHUM provides a variety of service opportunities that meet the needs of our clients as well as broaden and deepen the life experiences of our volunteers. Whether you want to give a few hours once or volunteer on a weekly basis, CHUM has a volunteer experience for you.

The volunteer opportunities at CHUM are as diverse and varied as the volunteers themselves. From adopting an apartment at our shelter to stocking the shelves at the food shelf, CHUM has many ways to put your talents Volunteers at CHUMto work.

Some things to consider prior to calling: 
   How much time do you have available (days, hours)? 
   What are your interests and passions?

Listed here are our most immediate volunteer and donation opportunities.

Donate Time

Rhubarb Festival Harvesting and Chopping: Harvest rhubarb in your neighborhood then chop and freeze it in 4-cup portions. Rhubarb is up early this year so you can start as soon as it is ripe and keep on harvesting.  All Rhubarb, fresh or frozen, can be delivered to First Lutheran Church starting on June 21st, or to your congregation if they are baking for the Festival.

Fix Broken Glass Blocks: We need an expert in glass block repair to replace broken glass blocks in window wells at CHUM East Food Shelf. We have the glass blocks! Contact Meg at 727-2391 or chumfs@chumduluth.org 
 
 
Donate Items

Homeless Outreach would like to provide our clients living outdoors with sleeping bags, bug spray, umbrellas and rain coats! Some of our clients who are now housed could use a TV digital converter box; used or new are accepted.  

Nurse Clinic is requesting sunscreen, denture cleaner and denture adhesive, and women's NEW underwear sizes 5 and 6.

Supportive Housing has a family of 3 is in need of a book case. Please call Veronica at 218-740-2500

Following volunteer opportunities are not immeidate needs but rather opportunities that are often available.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANCE
Assist with general office duties including filing, answering telephones, mailings, copying, data entry, and other miscellaneous duties. Time commitment: As arranged by individual programs.

FOOD SHELF WORKER:
Sort and weigh food, stock food shelves, and pack food bags.
Time commitment: Flexible hours Monday - Friday depending on particular job assignment and location.

ADVISORY COMMITTEES OR TASK FORCES
Meet with CHUM staff and other community members in an advisory capacity for Development, Congregational Outreach, CHUM Church, Drop-In Center, Food Shelf, Health and Wellness, or Housing.  Time commitment: Meetings generally held every other month throughout the year. Times and days vary by program.

CHUM CHURCH TEACHER
Teach Christian education class to a group of 8-10 adults with developmental disabilities. Time commitment: Once a month, Sunday afternoon from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

CHUM CHURCH PEN PAL
Become a pen pal to a CHUM Church member. Send cards, letters, or postcards on a regular basis to someone who rarely receives mail. A great family project. Time commitment: Flexible.

DINING SITE ASSISTANT
Assist with noon meal preparation at the Drop-In Center. Time commitment: Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

FOOD SHELF OFFICE WORKER
Assist with general office duties including answering the telephone, data entry, record keeping, filing, mailings, copying, and other miscellaneous jobs. Time commitment: Hours and days flexible.

GROUP ACTIVITY VOLUNTEER
Coordinate an activity such as movie day, games day, talent show, sports trivia contest, karaoke, or any other activity of interest. Time commitment: Afternoons or early evening, as arranged per volunteer's schedule.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
Short term volunteer opportunities with special projects including Back-to-School Backpack Project, SHARE Drive, Supply Drives, Letter Carriers Food Drive, and others. Time commitment: As arranged.

TOURNAMENT COORDINATOR
Plan and implement tournaments such as cribbage, spades, hearts, darts, or other activities of interest. Time commitment: Afternoons or early evening, as arranged per volunteer's schedule.
