CHUM Church

One of the oldest CHUM Programs, CHUM Church was started in 1974 to provide spiritual growth and to nurture people with developmental disabilities, offering a home church/community which members identify as their own. Based on the belief that everyone has gifts to offer and the right to hear and learn about God’s love and grace, this program includes monthly Christian education, worship, and fellowship which transcend traditional denominational boundaries. Each person is valued and treated with openness and acceptance. Individual capabilities, strengths and personal goals are recognized, supported and affirmed; and participation as lectors, choir members, ushers acolytes is encouraged.

Volunteer involvement and support are a vital part of the program. Each month a CHUM member congregation acts as the “host church”. Members of that congregation join in worship and fellowship and provide refreshments. All people in the community are welcome and encouraged to worship with us each month.

You’ve Got Mail

Everyone likes to receive mail. You know the feeling of an empty mailbox and, likewise, how exciting it can be to find a letter in the mail.  Many CHUM Church members rarely receive mail. Cards or letters from friends brighten their day and say, “I’m thinking about you.”

You can make someone very happy when they hear, “You’ve got mail”.
It’s easy. Send or email a greeting card for holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas. Remember them on their birthday. Picture post cards are great to send as they are colorful and can be used as decorations.

This is a wonderful family project! Children can help select a card or pictures to include.  If you’re interested, contact Meg Kearns.

Inclusive Ministries

Having choices is essential for all people. Some people with developmental disabilities may choose full participation in a mainstream congregation, so CHUM Church program staff work with both individuals and congregations to promote and encourage inclusion. Assistance is offered to identify barriers and take steps to eliminate them. Presentations and/or training on inclusive ministry and accessibility are available for church staff, Christian education teachers, boards and committees.
