CHUM Emergency Food Shelf (Since 1981) The food shelf provides a five-day food order for people without food or the resources to buy food, and advocacy services connecting people to community resources (e.g., shelter, medical care, children’s services, employment, clothing and emergency monies). A staff member from UMD Extension Services teaches a nutrition class at the food shelf once a week. During 2006, staff and approximately 100 volunteers distributed more than a 250,000 pounds of food. An average of 518 households received emergency food each month; roughly 40% of those fed were children. |
