Emergency Shelter Services
CHUM operates a three unit family shelter and a congregate emergency shelter for single adults. A portion of the
congregate shelter (12 beds) is reserved for transitional housing. Shelter guests have access to all CHUM services.

Program location: The Congregate Shelter and Transitional Housing Program are located at 125 N. First Ave.
W. The Family Shelter is located a few blocks from the main shelter.

Hours open: The Congregate Shelter and Transitional Housing Program are open from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. every
day of the year. The Family Shelter is open 24 hours a day.

Congregate Emergency Shelter (Since 1982)
The congregate shelter is an overnight emergency shelter offering dormitory-style sleeping accommodations. The
shelter has 48 emergency shelter beds divided into a large section for men and a smaller section for women or
mothers with children. Guests stay in the shelter anywhere from one night to 30 days. During 2006, the congregate
shelter provided 11,264 nights of shelter.

Family Shelter Apartments (Since 1994)
CHUM’s three family shelter apartments each house one family at a time in a homelike atmosphere. Guests at the
family shelter receive food from the food shelf so that they can cook and eat together. Families stay in shelter for
about one month while they look for new housing. When they leave, they receive “house warming gifts” of kitchen
and household goods to get them started in their new home.

During 2006, the family shelter apartments housed 39 different families. Each household worked closely with the
family stabilization advocate. Seven other families that could not be accommodated in family shelter stayed in the
congregate shelter.
