CHUM Marathoner running to help keep people on their feet |
Doug Happy is a familiar face to many Duluthians-writer, actor, poet, social justice activist and marathon runner. Doug, a CHUM employee, will run his eighteenth Grandma's Marathon next month, dedicating his final run to causes close to his heart. "Running a marathon fits in with the bigger picture of life," Doug observed. "When you first begin running marathons, you often question if you can actually make it or if you have the discipline to accomplish this goal. You get answers to those questions by hearing people cheer you on or seeing spectators on the sidelines supporting you". People in poverty ask those same questions day after day: Can I make it? Do I have the discipline to accomplish a goal of housing, employment? People in poverty have been experiencing support from Duluthians cheering on social change by supporting things like the Blueprint to End Poverty and the Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness. Doug has been running marathons for over 20 years. Although he won't be running Grandma's any longer, Doug plans on continuing to work for social justice. One way Doug plans to give back is through raising money from his final run and donating the money to two programs that help low-income families and individuals. The first effort Doug would like to support is CHUM's Gabriel Project. The Gabriel Project strives for social and economic justice for all of Duluth. It also has a discretionary fund that helps families obtain items like bus passes, gas vouchers, and medication co-pays. If you would like more information about the CHUM Gabriel Project, please contact Veronica Gaidelis-Langer at 218-310-0063. Doug would also like to support the Homeless School Education Fund. This account was set up to help low-income students in the district obtain bus passes, go on field trips or obtain other necessities they may need during the school year. If you would like more information on this fund, please contact Deb Wagner at 218-336-8700 ext. 1034. What better way to conclude one's history of running Grandma's Marathon than to raise money for people who need help? Doug leaves us with one last thought to ponder: "My love for running has given me many gifts in life that I wish to share with others". If you would like to donate to Doug's campaign, please call Veronica with the CHUM Gabriel Project at 218-310-0063 or send checks to CHUM; Attention Gabriel Project; 102 W. Second Street; Duluth, MN 55802. Veronica will see that your donation is allocated between the two funds. |
